UNCP Brave Foundations

             Brave Foundations started as The Literacy Commons in the fall of 2011, it was founded and initiated by students and faculty at UNCP. The Literacy Commons was established as a volunteer-based organization dedicated to advancing creativity and critical thinking by promoting and practicing the plurality of literacies. It served the city of Pembroke and the surrounding Robeson County region by offering a multilayered foundation of educational outreach guided by creative and critical thinking. Some of the programs offered were; after school literacy enrichment and creative writing programs, Native Authors Community Reading Project, Community Health and Wellness Projects.

              In 2018/19 The Literacy Commons came under UNCP’s Office of Community and Civic Engagement and the name was changed to Brave Foundations. With the name change came a change in programs. With the founding principles of The Literacy Commons in mind, the Brave Foundations continued the reading literacy program that The Literacy Commons was known for but also includes mentoring/youth life skills, and a adult life skills project.

     We strive to provide the best possible foundation for the citizens of Robeson and the surrounding counties in North Carolina to become positive and productive members of their communities. Through our programs we provide youth with the tools they need to make positive choices and changes in their lives and the community at large.
