Voter Registration & Voting as a UNCP Student

The deadline for regular voter registration in North Carolina for general elections is October 8th, 2021. The one-stop early voting period for the November 2021 municipal elections is October 14th-October 30th. Check your registration status at Check your Registration. You can register and vote at the same time during early voting.

Not Registered: Not registered to vote?  No problem! You can register during early voting and vote at the same time. As a student, you can register to vote using your campus address or choose to register or remain registered at your permanent or home address.  If you would like to register using your college address, you can do so by following the steps below:

Students living on-campus:  Students that live on-campus and have yet to register here in Pembroke, NC can go to the early polling location with both their student I.D. and North Carolina driver’s license or ID number, or the last 4 digits of your social security number.  At the polling location is a list of all students that live on-campus which serves as your proof of residence to register to vote here in this community. Be sure to use the correct 911 address for your residence hall.

Students living off-campus: Students that live off-campus in Pointe, The View, or Commons and have yet to register here in Pembroke, NC can go to the UNCP Registrar’s office (Lumbee Hall 133) and request an official letter from the university to serve as proof of residence to register to vote here in this community.

For those that live elsewhere and have yet to register, you must bring acceptable proof of residence documents which include a NC driver’s license or other photo ID issued by a government agency or a current utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck or other government document that shows your name and address.  You can only be registered and vote in one location.

Registering to Vote Online: Students can register to vote online by going to NCStudentVote.org and following the steps provided. Be sure to use your correct address if living on campus! This information can be found above. Online registration can only be completed if you have a NC State issued ID or Driver's License. If you do not have a NC State issued ID or Drivers License, complete the online form and then follow the steps to print out your registration and mail it in to your local or state board of elections office. Once registered, you will receive a voter registration card in the mail confirming your registration status within several weeks.

 Common Questions/Concerns

  • Federal Financial Aid: Where you register to vote will not affect your federal financial aid, such as Pell Grants, Perkins or Stafford loans, or your dependency status for FAFSA.
  • Status as a Dependant on Your Parents' Taxes: Being registered to vote at a different address from your parents does not prevent them from claiming you as a dependent on their taxes.
  • Tuition Status: Being deemed out-of-state for tuition purposes does not prevent you from choosing to register to vote in your campus community.
  • Driver's License or Car Registration: Registering to vote does not affect driver's license or car registration, but individuals are required to obtain a North Carolina driver's license within 60 days of establishing residency in the state. For more information, students may contact the North Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles.
