Garden Maintenance

Expired

Description

INTRODUCTION

Welcome to the Campus Garden & Apiary program at UNCP! Help our Campus Garden Grow! We need help each week to do routine and specialized tasks to maintain our garden. Meet at Pine Cottage, UNCP Campus. Gloves and tools provided. Dress appropriately for outdoor work (close toed shoes, long pants, long sleeves, hat). WEAR a Mask when working in the garden.

LOCATION

The Campus Garden is located next to the Pine Cottage on the UNCP campus map. There is a covered shelter there for you to leave items that you bring with you. We will try our best to have drinks and snacks for you but you may want to pack a few of your own. There are portable latrines in the field for your comfort and you can wash your hands using the garden hoses.

BE PREPARED – SAFETY FIRST

Please come dressed prepared for field conditions. WEAR clothes and shoes that you can get dirty! Closed shoe or a good pair of athletic shoes is required. Socks are also required. You should wear long pants, a t-shirt and even a lightweight long sleeve shirt to protect your skin from the sun. SPRAY your clothes with insect repellant before coming out to the garden. WEAR sunscreen, WEAR a hat, BRING a water bottle. AVOID wearing perfume or using perfumed soap or lotion when coming out to the garden. Try and remember not to eat bananas before or while at the garden (related to a chemical sensed by the honeybees). WEAR safety goggles when weed eating or mowing. IF POSSIBLE wear LIGHT COLORED clothing. WHEN working in, near, or around the apiary WEAR a bee suit. Our bees are friendly so if you encounter them while working stay calm and do not scream and run. You will scare them (and everyone else) for sure! All of the bee suits, safety glasses and garden type equipment will be provided for you. We have garden gloves for you to WEAR – different types and sizes. ALWAYS wear garden gloves out at the garden please. Besides the apiary there are plenty of ants so taking these precautions will protect you and ensure that you have a pleasant time out at the garden & apiary. If you want to change your clothes before and after working in the garden you can do that in the shed. However, we do not have an outside shower for your use yet. LET US know if you have any allergies or medical conditions that we need to be aware of so that we can be prepared and also do not ask you to participate in activities that you should not do. Whenever you encounter any type of problem when working out at the garden and apiary, whether it be medical, personal, or related to your volunteer activities we want to know RIGHT AWAY so please tell us! You are not expected to do ANYTHING that you are not comfortable with when in the garden. Gardens are peaceful and relaxing places solely for your benefit and the benefit of others.
