Black artists of all ages from across North Carolina are invited to take part in Legacy: NC Black Artist Photo Shoot, a free community-centered photography experience celebrating creativity, history, and connection. The event will take place on April 12 at 1:00 PM at the historic Orange Street School in Fayetteville.
Orange Street School holds a vital place in Fayetteville’s Black history. Built in 1915, it was one of the first publicly funded schools for African American students in the city and later became the original site of E.E. Smith High School, a name recognized by generations of Fayetteville residents. At a time when educational opportunities for Black students were severely limited, Orange Street School stood as a symbol of progress, self-determination, and community investment in Black excellence. Today, it remains one of the city’s oldest surviving landmarks tied to Black public education.
The location was intentionally selected to honor a legacy rooted in learning, empowerment, and future-building, aligning with the mission of the event to uplift Black artists in a space historically dedicated to growth and opportunity.
Hosted by Black Artist Forward, a Cumberland County–based nonprofit dedicated to advancing opportunities for African American artists, Legacy reflects the organization’s commitment to visibility, sustainability, and community for Black creatives. Black Artist Forward supports artists through access to jobs, grants, professional development, and network-building, with the goal of creating pathways that allow artists not just to create, but to thrive.
The photo shoot will provide free professional headshots and group photographs for Black artists of all ages who are pursuing or considering a career in the arts. Participants are encouraged to bring one prop that represents their art form, such as a painting, instrument, camera, book, or tool of their craft, and to dress colorfully to reflect the vibrancy and diversity of Black artistic expression.
This event is presented in partnership with Greater Life of Fayetteville, an organization widely known for its deep roots in the community and its work supporting youth and families through education, mentorship, and arts enrichment. Greater Life has consistently provided accessible arts education and creative opportunities for underserved youth, making them a natural partner in celebrating and cultivating the next generation of Black artists.
Legacy: NC Black Artist Photo Shoot aims to showcase the diversity of Black artists across North Carolina while building a strong, supportive network where creatives can connect, collaborate, and lean on one another.
The event is free and open to the public.
