I am Destiny Locklear, a junior Biology major at UNCP. A little backstory in how I got involved in the office is that I attended an Alternative Spring Break Trip, 2023, and it changed my life forever. I knew after that trip that I wanted to become involved in service and I was eager to get a position in the office. While getting ready to start the Fall 2023, I was contacted about filling a position which I was so thrilled about. In the Office of Civic and Community Engagement, I am the Service Intern for Community Forward Fellowship.

The Community Forward Fellowship is a 2-year program that will help the fellows build as well as build onto their skills in being a good leader. We cover healthy habits, goal setting, personal development, etc. through workshops as well as a course we are all required to take called Student Development Theory. This fellowship has allowed me to become close with a group of people I probably would have never met any other way. I am so honored to see the fellows grow in the way they have so far in this first year, and I'm excited to see how they will continue to grow into next year when we will start working with community partners.

Working in the office has been a huge part in me becoming more involved with things and people of my interest, as well as being a better person/student/friend all at the same time.

If I were to give any advice to a fellow brave, it would be to get involved ASAP. I wish I would have gotten more involved with campus activities in my freshman year, because here I am, almost a senior, and it feels like the past 3 years have gone in the blink of an eye.
