Hosted by the Office for Community and Civic Engagement and the Advising Center, this day of service was focused on the First Year Common Read “The Other Wes Moore”.  We started our day in the University Center with an opening ceremony and breakfast sponsored by McDonald's.  182 volunteers led by 11 UNCP Site Leaders were divided into many sections to volunteer with 6 different community partners.  We had opportunities with the Methodist Home for Children, Odum Home for Children, Sacred Pathways, and the Robeson County Church and Community Center (RCCCC).  In efforts of the goal to become the 2nd UNC system school to join Tree Campus USA by next school year, we planted numerous trees around campus; this will be a continuous and ongoing project for the future.

At the end of the service, site leaders led a reflection with volunteers at the service sites.  Each volunteer was asked two questions: “Who or what has had a strong influence in your life?” and “What can you do to positively influence others around you?”  Participates got to share and learn from each other discovering that participants were mostly influenced by family and community members. We concluded the reflection with a powerful quote, a quote that started the whole event: “Young boys are more likely to believe in themselves if they know that there’s someone, somewhere, who shares that belief.  To carry the burden of belief alone is too much for most young shoulders.”  This is a quote from the Common Read, The Other Wes Moore.  With such wonderful weather and the conclusion of the service, we had a cookout at the Pine Cottage graciously provided by Sodexo.
